How or when did you first “discover” Art?
Ever since I was a small child, and could first hold a crayon, I have been painting and drawing. When I was about seven, my grandfather gave me my first camera, a Kodak Brownie, and I was hooked on photography.
I attended Ringling School of Art in the 70s and have studying art and photography, all my life.
Name one of your greatest creative influences and why?
The beaches and shoreline of Cape Cod and the Islands, I find solace and inspiration on the beaches.
What made you decide to become an Artist?
I don’t think there ever was a consious decision to become an artist, it’s part of who I am.
What are you currently working on?
I’m working on a series of panoramic images of the towns and beaches of Cape Cod and the Islands.
What is the most rewarding thing about being an Artist?
It makes me feel complete. I can’t imagine a life without art.
What is the hardest thing about being an Artist?
Seeing the finished work, in my mind’s eye, and stuggling to reach that in actuality.
Briefly describe your studio.
I work out of my home, I have converted a guest room, into a small studio. I have wonderful even north light, and several large windows.
What is in your CD player when you work?
When I am painting, I listen to blues for the most part. Keb ‘Mo and Kenny Neal in particular. When I am working on photographs, I like to listen to jazz.
What is the last exhibition you saw?
I saw an exhibition at the Cahoon Museum in Cotuit. It was a “Feast For the Eyes”.. Paintings of food and food related subjects.
How does Nantucket inspire your work?
The natural beauty of Nantucket is inspiring in itself, then add in the wonderful architecture, and the stunning gardens, I find inspiration, nearly every place I look.
How do you relax when not working?
When I need to get away from my work, I like to ge! t out on the water in my kayak, it’s a very zen experience, and brings me back to myself.
