The National Gallery of Art has announced the first full retrospective of American artist George Bellows in more than three decades will open in 2012.

Bellows, one of the artists of the Ashcan School of Realists, was an important transitional figure between the Victorian and modern eras. Widely known for his dramatic scenes of boxers and urban life, Bellows was interested in everything around him. His work is celebrated for its detailed renderings of dreary life in New York, with laundry hanging out apartment windows and people crowded on tenement steps. But he found a contrast in the lyrical views of snow in the parks, and in formal portraits, mostly of his family.

Judith A. Brust is pleased to announce her new affiliation with The Gallery at 35 Main and gallery owner and collector Kathleen Knight. Brust will join the line-up of established artists represented by Knight at her two Nantucket galleries—The Gallery at Four India, which Knight has owned for the past 23 years, and The Gallery at 35 Main, which she opened in 2009 in its prominent, two-level Main Street location.

Brust is an internationally known artist whose body of work spans over 30 years. She holds an M.A. and M.F.A. from SUNY Albany and has exhibited extensively in both group and solo shows in the United States and abroad. She founded galleryblue in Rochester, New York in 2004 and moved the gallery to Old South Wharf on Nantucket in 2006 when she and her husband, Bob, moved to the island. Over the years, Judith welcomed many modern artists to exhibit along side of her own works in layered monoprints on paper and canvas, paintings and sculptures. In addition to recognizing other modernists, both experienced and emerging, Brust worked with her team at galleryblue in developing community outreach exhibits and shows that could benefit local non-profits such as the Nantucket Marine Mammal Conservation Program and the Nantucket Arts Council.

This latest Nantucket-based (we should really say Tuckernuck-based…) novel goes on sale July 6th, and Nantucket Bookworks are opening early to celebrate! Join them for coffee, mimosas and doughnuts and toast our charming and bestselling author. THE ISLAND is a great read and an absolute must for your beach bag!

More About The Book

Birdie Cousins has thrown herself into the details of her daughter Chess’s lavish wedding, from the floating dance floor in her Connecticut back yard to the color of the cocktail napkins. Like any mother of a bride-to-be, she is weathering the storms of excitement and chaos, tears and joy. But Birdie, a woman who prides herself on preparing for every possibility, could never have predicted the late-night phone call from Chess, abruptly announcing that she’s cancelled her engagement.

It’s only the first hint of what will be a summer of upheavals and revelations. Before the dust has even begun to settle, far worse news arrives, sending Chess into a tailspin of despair. Reluctantly taking a break from the first new romance she’s embarked on since the recent end of her 30-year marriage, Birdie circles the wagons and enlists the help of her younger daughter Tate and her own sister India. Soon all four are headed for beautiful, rustic Tuckernuck Island, off the coast of Nantucket, where their family has summered for generations. No phones, no television, no grocery store – a place without distractions where they can escape their troubles.

But throw sisters, daughters, ex-lovers, and long-kept secrets onto a remote island, and what might sound like a peaceful getaway becomes much more. Before summer has ended, dramatic truths are uncovered, old loves are rekindled, and new loves make themselves known. It’s a summertime story only Elin Hilderbrand can tell, filled with the heartache, laughter, and surprises that have made her page-turning, bestselling novels as much a part of summer as a long afternoon on a sunny beach.

Elin Hilderbrand lives on Nantucket with her husband and their three young children. She grew up in Collegeville, PA, and traveled extensively before settling on Nantucket, which has been the setting for her eight previous novels. Hilderbrand is a graduate of JohnsHopkinsUniversity and the graduate fiction workshop at the University of Iowa.
