Leroy Neiman Art Theft on Nantucket

Leroy Neiman Cioppinos Nantucket Painting International Cuisine

Cioppinos restaurants signature piece of Art “International Cuisine” - a signed limited edition print of Leroy Neiman’s, has been stolen this month.

Neiman is a widely know for his sports paintings seen around the world during coverage of the Olympics and other events. The signed art print taken from Cioppinos has hung in the dining room for the past 12 years and could be worth as much as $15,000.

“The person who took it knew what they were doing. They came right in and just took the print and nothing else,” said Root. “Nothing else in the restaurant was even slightly disturbed.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 239-370-7581 or the Nantucket Police Department at 508-228-1212. A cash reward will be offered.

Paul McCartney performs “A Day In The Life” live

Bo Diddley’s sad demise put us all in a pensive mood for a-few hours, that was somehow resolved by finding this great quote from the man himself..

“I opened the door for a lot of people, and they just ran through and left me holding the knob.”
Bo Diddley

Now we can’t be sure that the big fella was referring directly to the Beatles (although there is documented resentment against the British Invasion from some of the original bluesmen, who were neither credited nor rewarded for cover versions) - but there was a certain pathos felt in the Nantucket Art offices when we viewed this footage of Paul McCartney choosing to play ‘A Day In The Life’ - for the 1st time ever - on Sunday in his home town of Liverpool…

Bo Diddley Art Tribute

Bo Diddley

A bad month for innovators - if it wasn’t bad enough hearing of the death the Artist Robert Rauschenberg, news now reached us at Nantucket Art that ‘The Originator’ Bo Diddley passed yesterday too.  Diddley was an inspiration to R’n'B and the Art world in equal measure (see the Peter Blake painting above) and the modern worlds of Music and Art would be radically different without them both…

Sidewalk Art Show 2008

The Art Season on Nantucket starts in earnest this weekend with the Artists Association of Nantucket’s Sidewalk Art Show.

The Sidewalk Art Show was founded in 1930 by the illustrator and painter Maud Stumm as an outdoor exhibition originally sited along the walls of Nantucket Atheneum. The show was open to all artists, professional or amateur and was a resounding success, drawing hundreds of visitors. Of the original show The Inquirer and Mirror reviewer wrote:

“The wide shady walk by the library was an ideal place to examine and discuss Art and the beauty of Nantucket, which was the principal subject of the oil, water-color, black and white studies displayed. Little children, tourists, sailors, townspeople came again and again, eagerly examining the varied aspects of the Island, and deciding which was truest to life.”

Sidewalk Art Show 2008
10 am - 6 pm Artists Association of Nantucket, AAN Gallery, 19 Washington St. All day outdoor art sale. Rain date 5/25. 508-228-0294.

Facebook’s new Facelift

Facebook

Facebook is due a Spring clean, and first on the list is clearing out all the clutter. The new look is likely to remove a lot of the third party applications currently displayed on your page—personal information, photos, the continually updating news feed, and the “wall”, where users can post comments, for example—and divide them onto separate pages and accessible through distinct tabs.

”People are starting to feel that Facebook is quickly becoming like MySpace,” says Adam Ostrow, editor-in-chief of Mashable.com, the online social networking news site.

There is a groundswell of opinion that Facebook was in danger of selling out in the dash to feature new (often ad-based) content. Let’s hope this is a step back to it’s more user friendly origins.
