The National Gallery of Art has announced the first full retrospective of American artist George Bellows in more than three decades will open in 2012.

Bellows, one of the artists of the Ashcan School of Realists, was an important transitional figure between the Victorian and modern eras. Widely known for his dramatic scenes of boxers and urban life, Bellows was interested in everything around him. His work is celebrated for its detailed renderings of dreary life in New York, with laundry hanging out apartment windows and people crowded on tenement steps. But he found a contrast in the lyrical views of snow in the parks, and in formal portraits, mostly of his family.

We loved stumbling upon this blog and finding the exquisite doodles of Zoe Brookes. Of her Nantucket inspired sketches she writes “Lanterns, flags, sea shells, some harpoons mixed in there, plus some general nautical imagery for good measure. Plans? Definitely a strung up lantern pattern for maybe fabric application (I’m thinking a skirt?) and maybe play the old school metal ones against a more vibrant, playful paper lantern design. Also I want to play with the flags more! Results to come!”

Bo Diddley Art Tribute

The NY Times sadly reported last week that the American artist Robert Rauschenberg has died on Monday night at his home on Captiva Island, Fla. He was 82.

In 1953, Rauschenberg stunned the art world by erasing a drawing by Willem de Kooning. He went on to become the first American artist to win the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale and become one of the best loved American Contemporary Artists of our time.
