How or when did you first “discover” Art?
I have been drawing since I could hold a pencil. I just found a way to keep doing it.
Name one of your greatest creative influences and why?
I can’t escape John Coltrane as the largest influence in my work. I look at painters from all time periods, of course, but it’s the abstraction, depth and spirituality of great Jazz that moves me most.
What made you decide to become an Artist?
I felt I didn’t have any choice really…
What are you currently working on?
There are a couple of large canvases propped against the wall that are wet and many small panels scattered around the floor. I also draw most every day.
What is the most rewarding thing about being an Artist?
First and foremost, my friendship with other artists and second would be the opportunity to travel that a life in art has afforded me.
What is the hardest thing about being an Artist?
Never having enough time in the studio.
Briefly describe your studio.
I work in an old mill in Pawtucket – a very large space with high ceilings. large windows with north light looking out a factory. It is surprisingly ordered for an art studio but right now is very, very cold.
What is in your CD player when you work?
I’m an iTunes junkie – I select shuffle and will be as likely to hear Keith Jarrett as the Clash.
What is the last exhibition you saw?
Maya Lin in Chelsea
How does Nantucket inspire your work?
The light, the weather, the landscape and the bigness of the sky are all elements you will see in my work if you look for it.
How do you relax when not working?
I am obsessed with golf and play whenever possible or ride my motorcycle – a strange mix of hobbies, I know but it makes perfect sense to me.
